"The Surrogate is quickly becoming one of the more crowd-pleasing pics at the fest, picking up a considerable amount of buzz with each screening. The film stars John Hawkes as a paraplegic polio victim who sets out to find a sex surrogate (Helen Hunt) wiling to take his virginity. Fox Searchlight acquired worldwide rights to the flick, which also stars William H. Macy."

_“The Surrogate” is ultimately a romantic comedy about one man’s fears and his struggles to overcome them. “I didn’t want to make a biopic,” Lewin said. “I wanted to make a relationship movie.” As written by Lewin, and played by Hawkes in a performance that recalls Daniel Day-Lewis’ Oscar-winning role in “My Left Foot,” O’Brien is an articulate and self-deprecating observer of his life. “I can be a bit time-consuming, but I’m worth the trouble,” he says early in the film. Determined not to die a virgin, he turns to a priest (William H. Macy) to discuss his options.

With the priest’s reluctant blessing, O’Brien contacts Greene (Helen Hunt). Hunt boldly pulls a full Fassbender, stripping naked as she tries to teach O’Brien how to make love and “stop acting like you’re going to your own execution.”

A new feature film for Such Much Films, The Surrogate has been selected for U.S. Dramatic Competition at The Sundance Film Festival 2012.  Written and directed by Ben Lewin and produced by Judi Levine, the feature film is an entirely independent production – very much a family affair – which has been brewing since 2006.  Inspired by an essay written by Mark O’Brien, the film took off when Oscar-nominee John Hawkes accepted the role of Mark, a man determined to lose his virginity despite spending much of his time inside an iron lung.  Heeding the advice of his unconventional priest (William H. Macy), his journey to manhood with Cheryl the sex surrogate (Helen Hunt) unfolds in a most intriguing way.

Here’s the scoop on Sundance... out of over 4,042 feature-length films submitted, only 110 were selected.  Of those, only 16 (out of 2,059 films from the US) were selected for US competition.

Filmmaker Ben Lewin's masterful brushstrokes endow every character with fullness and authenticity, fashioning rich metaphors and emotional nuance and fusing them into an exquisite, unforgettable awakening."
